How to Convert an HL7 v2 Message to FHIR JSON Using the Converter Tool ?

This guide explains the steps required to convert an HL7 v2 message into FHIR-compliant JSON format using the converter interface.

1. Open the HL7 to FHIR Converter

Navigate to the Converter tab located at the top of the interface. This is the default landing tab when the tool is first accessed.

2. Enter the Namespace

In the field labeled "Namespace," input the base URL or domain that corresponds to your organization or system. For example, you might enter https://abc.com.

3. Paste the HL7 v2 Message

In the field titled "Input HL7 Message," paste the complete HL7 v2 message that you want to convert. Ensure that the message includes all necessary segments and is properly formatted.
Warning
Note: Do not include PHI

4. Select the FHIR Profile

Choose the appropriate FHIR profile.
Note: This will by default be "FHIR R4," which is the currently supported version.

5. Convert the Message

Click the "Convert to FHIR" button. The tool will process the HL7 message and generate a corresponding FHIR JSON structure.

6. Review the Result

If the conversion is successful, a green validation message will appear stating "FHIR R4 Validated Successfully." You may now view or export the generated FHIR bundle by clicking the FHIR Viewer tab.
